Finding Strength Through Volunteering
At Nourish Hub, we believe in the power of community, connection, and shared experiences. Kayliegh’s journey is a testament to how volunteering can be a transformative force, helping individuals rediscover their sense of purpose and belonging. In this blog, Kayliegh is sharing with us her inspiring story of resilience, growth, and the impact of a supportive environment.
A Struggle with Mental Health and Loneliness
For several years, Kayliegh struggled with depression and intense feelings of loneliness following the loss of a loved one. Isolated and disconnected, she found it difficult to maintain relationships and express her emotions. Despite seeking therapy and trying different coping strategies, she felt trapped in a cycle of hopelessness, often avoiding social situations and staying at home.
But change was on the horizon. A simple discovery would mark the beginning of a new chapter in her life.
A New Opportunity: Discovering Nourish Hub
One day, Kayliegh came across an advertisement for a cookery course at Nourish Hub. Unsure but hopeful, she took the first step and signed up. On the first day, however, she found herself overwhelmed—meeting new people, trying new ingredients, and stepping into an unfamiliar environment felt daunting. She wasn’t ready yet.
Determined to try again, Kayliegh enrolled in the next course when it became available. This time, she completed it, and the experience proved to be both rewarding and empowering. Encouraged by Helen, who facilitated the sessions, Kayliegh was introduced to Andreea and the idea of volunteering—a step that felt both exciting and intimidating.
Taking the Leap: Embracing Volunteering
Stepping into the role of a volunteer was challenging at first. New tasks, new people, and a new environment triggered anxieties, but something about Nourish Hub felt different—it was a safe space, free from judgment, where she could be herself.
With time, she began to embrace the experience. One of the pivotal moments in her journey was a conversation with her mentor and Front of House supervisor, Decibel. This interaction helped Kayliegh realise that she didn’t have to hide her struggles; vulnerability was not a weakness, but a strength. Slowly, she opened up to fellow volunteers, and in return, she found solidarity and understanding. She was no longer alone.
Building Confidence and Facing Challenges
Through volunteering, Kayliegh found herself engaging with a diverse range of people, some facing their own hardships—housing insecurity, mental health struggles, addiction, and unemployment. These interactions, while initially challenging, became a source of healing. In supporting others, she began to acknowledge her own resilience and self-worth.
She also discovered new skills along the way. Whether working Front of House, assisting in the kitchen, or supporting cookery classes, she embraced every opportunity to learn and grow. With each shift, she gained confidence, proving to herself that she was capable and valued.
“I feel very proud that others see what I’m doing and that I’m trying my best to move forward and get better.” – Kayliegh
Finding a Sense of Belonging
Kayliegh’s journey is a powerful reminder of the impact a supportive community can have on mental well-being. The team at Nourish Hub provided a safe, nurturing environment where she could connect with others, feel valued, and rebuild her confidence.
From volunteering and community lunches to social interactions, she has formed lasting relationships and built a strong support network. More importantly, she has discovered a renewed sense of purpose.
“Being part of a community that values empathy, mutual support, and emotional safety can be a powerful force in overcoming loneliness and depression. We are very proud of Kayliegh and the journey she has been on. Her presence at the Hub, always with a smile on her face, is the highlight of our week.” – Andreea, Deputy Hub Manager
Kayliegh’s story is just one example of how volunteering can create meaningful change—not only in the lives of those being supported but also for those offering their time and energy. Her journey at Nourish Hub is one of courage, perseverance, and hope, proving that healing is often found in the heart of a community.
